Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
